Yoga or Pilates? What's The Difference?

Yoga and Pilates Classes are here, but do you know what the difference is between the two? Let me explain!

Both Yoga and Pilates are low-impact exercises, both performed on a mat and accessible to all abilities from complete beginner to expert. You do not need to be able to touch your toes to come to class.

Yoga and Pilates are actually quite different! The best way to learn the difference is to come to class and try them out for yourself. It might surprise you which one you prefer!

Pilates is a system that uses very specific exercises, targeted to improve strength, flexibility and posture. It has a particular focus on the core. To gain a benefit from Pilates, you need to practice it on a regular basis. It was created by Joseph Pilates, who was an anatomist and a genius in mechanics!

Yoga is a holistic discipline that originates from ancient India.

Best for Flexibility: YOGA

Yoga helps to improve flexibility, Pilates focuses on relaxing the tense muscles and strengthen them.

Best for Abdominal Strength: PILATES

While both will enhance your core strength, results will be achieved much faster and more noticeably with Pilates.

Best for All-Over Strength: PILATES

If you are looking for the 'shake' and the 'burn' of working on those muscles, then Pilates is the one for you to really challenge your muscles.

Best for Back Pain: BOTH

Both disciplines strengthen the back muscles, providing more support and easing pain. Always let your teacher know if you are experiencing back pain and they will adapt the exercises for you to help ensure your back is protected.

Best for Helping the Mind, Conquering Depressing: YOGA

Yoga focuses on the whole body, including the mind and the spiritual connection. You learn to clear your mind through breathing techniques, learn how to breathe through stress and how to let-go of the tensions accumulated through daily life.

Best for Burning Calories: PILATES

You will burn slightly more calories at Pilates, however the focus is strength rather than cardio or fat burn, so it's best to add in other class-types in to your weekly routine to compliment your strength sessions.

Try each class and see which you prefer...or whether you want to do both!
